Japanese Garden at Hermann Park in Houston, Texas

Hermann Park in Houston Welcomes Millions of Visitors Every Year

Nestled at the southern end of the Museum District is a 445-acre destination known as Hermann Park in Houston.

It welcomes thousands of visitors every year, and there is much to see and do including:

Japanese Garden

Designed by world-renowned landscape architect Ken Nakajima, the Japanese Garden comes complete with waterfalls, bridges, and a teahouse. So, it offers a tranquil atmosphere, and as visitors explore the winding paths, they’ll see cherry trees, Japanese maples, wisteria, and so much more.

Marvin Taylor Trail

Surrounded by towering oak trees, the Marvin Taylor Trail is a former carriage path that includes a decomposed granite surface and new light poles. It spans two miles and its namesake is for community leader Marvin Taylor who once organized runners to help clean up the park.

McGovern Centennial Gardens

Furthermore, the McGovern Centennial Gardens are a memorial to the park’s centennial celebration, built in 2014. The custom gardens feature more than 50 tree species, 650 azaleas, and 55,000 perennial bulbs. And for those looking for a fun volunteer opportunity, McGovern is looking for garden ambassadors who both welcome visitors and answer questions.

McGovern Lake

Spanning eight acres, McGovern Lake features three islands, two of which are set aside for migratory birds. Activities include catch-and-release fishing and bird watching, and pedal boats are available for rental Friday through Sunday.

Hawkins Sculpture Garden

Finally, the Hawkins Sculpture Garden features busts of renowned figures from across the globe. These were a gift to the city over the last several years. They include busts of Martin Luther King Jr., Robert Burns, and Tony Lopez.
